Do these places still exist?
17 June 2007 Hello
In the late fifties I had the happiest year of my childhood in your little town. I lived with relatives on Potton Road and went to school at Shortmead Street Junior which I remember as being a pleasant small school with bee keeping. I remember visiting the Conservative club which I think was nearby and playing in the woods which lead down to the Rec (park) by the river Ivel.
There was a very popular walk way along the river bank and a nice selection of old pubs. My sister went to Rose Lane school which I remember as being a very impressive historical building. Do the places I mention still exist? I'd be interested to know.Regards Bob Jackson Brisbane Australia

BIGGLESWADE RAILWAY STATION
16 June 2007 Dear all
A MISSED OPPORTUNITY TO GET IT RIGHT AT BIGGLESWADE RAILWAY STATION
How pleasing it was to see the much needed non-slip surface installed on the station footbridge and steps, along with the long overdue part resurfacing of the pot hole ridden car park. But what a shame that the fundamental problem of how pedestrians can cross from Station Road to the booking office area and footbridge has been omitted from the mini-revamp.
The current design of the whole area on the town centre side of the station can only be described as extremely poor for all who have to use it, and absolutely appalling for those with sight loss or mobility problems and those with pushchairs. The footbridge is also a right of way for people wishing to cross the railway, so the wider population are also exposed to the inadequacies of the station area.
Motorists and pedestrians face the unsatisfactory position of trying hard to avoid each other particularly during the morning and evening peak, and is further compounded at night or in the dark evenings by the absence of adequate lighting. There is also the problem of the short pavement on the opposite side of the car park being partially obstructed by over growing bushes and trees.
As an employee of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (please note the recent name change from the Royal National Institute of the Blind) and am acutely aware of the fact that a blind person with the best long cane mobility skills would have a great deal of difficulty in negotiating their way from the pavement from Station Road to the booking office. Firstly, they would encounter the overgrowth obstructing the pavement and would have to find their way between 2 parked cars, Then cross an area with moving vehicles diagonally to reach the tactile area on the opposite side, avoiding parked cars once again long ways on. Does anyone want to give it a try?
At the very least, all that is required to solve the problem is a clearly defined tactile pavement or walkway across the car park, the provision of proper lighting and the removal of the obstructing greenery. This would enhance the whole area, and would vastly improve an important gateway to Biggleswade. Many have commented previously about the poor first impression the station gives to people arriving in the town by train.
I have brought this to the attention of train operator First Capital Connect and Network Rail, and have reminded them that they do have obligations to people with disabilities under the Disability Discrimination Act, and await their response. In the meantime, does anyone else share my views and concerns?
It is always important to point out that providing an accessible environment to assist people with disabilities also benefits the wider population, and the changes I have outlined would help everyone who has to use the station area to coexist much more safely.Paul Day

JAMES MCQUEEN LAUGHLAND
6 June 2007 I was wondering if this could be reposted with adding on a request of addresses of churches especially Presbyterian that my uncle may have attended.
Hello,
My name is Jean Tomczak, daughter of Annie Barr Laughland who emigrated to Canada in 1949. Her brother remained in England. His name was James McQueen Laughland, also known as Hamish. He married Hilda and they had two daughters, Carol and Susan. My mother last visited in the late 70's or early 80's and passed away in 1985. This was the last known town that my uncle resided in and one of his daughter's lived there as well. If any one remembers my uncle and can help me contact my cousins please email me at jean_tomczak@yahoo.ca
Thank you in advance for any help I receive.

Missing Ancestor - JAMES HENRY AISBETT 26 May 2007 My relative James Henry Aisbett lived in Biggleswade from after the First World War till the 1950's when he died .I think he must have married a girl from the area because he was born and lived to the age of 30 in Sunderland County Durham. I would be very interested to know how he came to make the move and if he had any family . We have been putting together our Family Tree and would like to be able to add more than just his name to it.

Looking for information on J Reynolds 20 May 2007 I am researching my family history and am wondering if anyone would help me out please? I am trying to find further information about my great grandfather J. Reynolds and beyond. I know he is commemorated on Biggleswade War Memorial and buried in Biggleswade Cemetery Grave 1535. He died 2nd December 1918 aged 24. His army number was 26759. As I am confined to a wheelchair I am limited in accessing information and would be grateful for any help anyone can give.
Many Thanks

Looking for relatives of James McQueen Laughland 17 May 2007 My name is Jean Tomczak and I posted this message last summer. I haven't heard anything from it and I was hoping it could be posted again along with the request of the names and addresses of churches. I am especially looking for any Presbyterian churches in the area where my uncle may have gone to church. I would like to write to them to see if any of the congregation may remember this family. Tingey Family
28 March 2007 Could someone ask Kathie Flah to contact me as I am a descendant from one of the Tingey families in Biggleswade.
William and Mary Tingey had a son James in about 1833. In 1841/51 Census they were listed as living in Cowfairlands. James went on to become a Shoemaker/Beer Retailer. He married Sarah Munt in 1855 in Luton.
Their children were:
William
Elizabeth 'Lizzie' - married George Swanborough
Arthur
Rosina - married Alfred Bellamy
Harriet - married Mr La Lascher
JamesI would dearly love to contact both Kathie and anybody else related to this family. James seems to have been born to William and Mary quite late in their lives and so there are probably more children attached to this original family. William was born in Biggleswade and Mary born in Eaton Socon. In the 1861 Census, James and Sarah were listed as running the 'Public House' on Saffron Road, Biggleswade.

Venue Needed
27 January 2007 Can Anyone HELP?
We are a new Performing Arts School in the Area and are trying to bring affordable classes in Acting, Singing and Dancing to the children and young adults of Biggleswade. We need to hire space, preferably two large rooms for classes on a Saturday morning during term time from 9.30 to 12. If anyone has any information of suitable church halls etc in the area or contact details of someone who can help it would be much appreciated. Email dreams-theatre@hotmail.com.
Many thanks.
Static Caravan Hire
4 January 2007 We are looking to hire a static caravan for two nights at weekends for a couple of times a month. This would be a halfway house for us as I am 63 and live in Hampshire and my lady partner is 62 and lives in Derbyshire. We are planning to marry in the very near future but because of marriage legalities are unable to meet in our own properties. We are very domesticated and like walking.
Happy New Year Everybody
