29 December 2006 Recently I was delighted to learn that the Bedfordshire Library had purchased a copy of a mystery novel that I have written. Detective work on my part revealed that it is in the library at Biggleswade and further detective work led me to this site and to the information about your town, which was of great interest to me.
My book is called, Capable of Murder and is set in England. If mystery novels interest you, I'd be pleased for you to read the book, which is in your library, and if you enjoy it (or even if not!) I'd be pleased to hear from you at bkbkbk12@hotmail.com
My website has details about my books.
Happy New Year to you all in Biggleswade, from Melbourne, Australia.

News on Website
23 December 2006 Sylvia and myself follow the news from her home area via your website and Bedford web page. We joke between us how she is talking with her brother she created a big search for mile stones, She was talking with him; on the phone and casually asked him if they had ever uncovered it and the rest is history, We have enjoyed an old acquaintance who has been to the States to visit us and we have made several visits back to England to her brother's home. However, we have reached the age now where we just communicate with her family and friends over there via computer and phone calls.
Keep up your interesting work and enjoy the holidays.. Attaching a card for her friends in her home area.

Gertrude May Barley McGettigan
20 October 2006 My mother, Gertrude May Barley McGettigan, otherwise known as "May Barley" grew up in Biggleswade and immigrated to the U.S. when she was in her early twenties. We lived for a year in Biggleswade when I was 10 years old and I returned at age 18 to live for a year with my grandfather, William H. Barley, now deceased. I worked on the square at D.G. Light Engineering for the chief inspector, my first full time job after graduating from High School in the U.S. My memories of Biggleswade and my family and friends there are treasured.
I would like to add some of the obituary from my mother's services.

My Biggleswade Family
25 September 2006 My Biggleswade Family
Hi found several messages bearing names from my family tree. Would love to hear from anyone with information regarding the following families. Winch, Moseley, Ballard, Shatbolt, Dean and Tingey.
Regards Kathie Flah
28 March 2007 Could someone ask Kathie Flah to contact me as I am a descendant from one of the Tingey families in Biggleswade.
William and Mary Tingey had a son James in about 1833. In 1841/51 Census they were listed as living in Cowfairlands. James went on to become a Shoemaker/Beer Retailer. He married Sarah Munt in 1855 in Luton.
Their children were:
William
Elizabeth 'Lizzie' - married George Swanborough
Arthur
Rosina - married Alfred Bellamy
Harriet - married Mr La Lascher
JamesI would dearly love to contact both Kathie and anybody else related to this family. James seems to have been born to William and Mary quite late in their lives and so there are probably more children attached to this original family. William was born in Biggleswade and Mary born in Eaton Socon. In the 1861 Census, James and Sarah were listed as running the 'Public House' on Saffron Road, Biggleswade.

Overnight Stay in Biggleswade & Ivel Cheese
29 August 2006 We are Len & Judy Ivel of Leicester, Massachusetts.
We are making a trip to Europe with a short stay on the return to England. We will be staying in London for two days and are planning on visiting Biggleswade for an Overnight hopefully on the 14th of September.
Where should we stay folks? From what we could find on the Internet the Crown Hotel looks like it is in the center not far from the river. We are interested in the Ivel River and or anything to do with the name Ivel.
Some time ago a friend who is a printer gave us a reprint of an advertisement from the London Times from the mid 1800's - the advertisement read: A VILE young lady on EVIL bent, lowered her VEIL with sly intent-"LEVI "she said "It's time to play-what shall we do to LIVE today ?" " You my dear may do as you please, I'm going to eat some IVEL Cheese."
Since then, we have been curious about your area because it also said the cheese was made in the valley of the Ivel River! Is this the St Ivel cheese we see here in the states? Looking forward to coming to Biggleswade and exploring the area.
Len & Judy Ivel
Yes The Crown Hotel is in the Town Centre, Stratton House Hotel is another option 5 minutes walk away.

25 August 2006 Biggleswade needs a cinema but they all closed long ago! However once a month the Cinema does come to town thanks to a small group of volunteers, so lets support them by spreading the word and going along.
The new season starts on Saturday Sept 9 with a showing of Mrs Henderson Presents. The full programme plus details of other events in the town is on the Notice Board.

Childrens activities
24 August 2006 Hi
We are moving to Biggleswade in a fortnight and I am keen to find out more about childrens activities. We have two daughters aged 6 and 3. I am interested in childrens play areas/centres. Where are the nearest park areas and are there any big soft play areas/wacky warehouse type places?
We have friends in Biggleswade but they don't have children so can't really help us with these questions! Would really appreciate tips from any local parents out there.
Thanks, Melissa
06 September 2006 Melissa
The nearest wacky warehouse is Kids World in Bedford, there are a couple of local swing parks - the most common is called the Rec.
There are lots of toddler/playgroups for your little one and Brownies for Your older girl (when she is 7). There are rainbows in the town but numbers are limited.
Drop me a line and I'll give you more directions if you want

Mildred Wells nee Brunsten
19 August 2006 I live in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and my husband is from Bedfordshire. His remaining family live in Odell, Bedfordshire.
I was on my way to the bank and I was thinking about my Mother-in-Law that I miss very much and loved so dearly. She passed away 7 years ago and I wish I had been able to spend some quality time with her in the months prior to her death.
I stopped at the bank and was just about to get out of my car when an elderly woman came up to the passenger side, mistaking my car for her friend's car. We had a chuckle and I teased her about wanting a lift from me.
I proceeded to the bank, and then travelled to another local mall to do some grocery shopping. I parked the car and guess who parked in front of me ... yes, the elderly woman who had tried to get into my car. Well, we once again had a chuckle and I teased her about following me to try to get that ride with me.
She came over to the car and we chatted for a minute and I immediately noticed her lovely English accent so I asked her where she came from and she said Biggleswade. What a surprise to find out that she came from Bedfordshire and we were both very familiar with lots of the same villages.
Her name is Mildred, she is 100 years old and she has been married to her second husband for 12 years! She is very bright and such a lovely lady to talk to. Her first husband's last name was Wells and her maiden name is Brunsten. What a strange twist of fate to have been thinking so deeply about my mother-in-law then suddenly running into Mildred. We exchanged phone numbers and are going to get together for tea some afternoon. I just may end up taking Mildred for that ride sometime in the future.
Maybe some of you know Mildred Wells nee Brunsten?

CHURCHYARD Family
10 August 2006 Hi, I am just hoping someone remembers the Churchyard family in the 1800, 1900 period. I would love to hear from anyone who recognises the name.
Regards, Linda
Hi Michelle
31 July 2006 Hi Michelle,
I remember your name but have to be honest and cannot picture your face as time is passing too fast.
I started at Southlands 1973, and went on to Holmemead and then Stratton. I have good memories of all, especially the people around me at that time, such as Pete & Chris Ball, Andrew Kingdom, Claire Blabber, Stewart Anderson, Andrew Houghton, Alison Costly, David Lawton, Jane Francis, Mark Gauge and many other that I can picture but who's names elude me now (unfortunately).
My form teachers were, as far as memory allows, Ms Smith, Mrs Wilson, Mr Dunkley, Mrs Morgan, ?, ?, and the head was Mrs Simmons (I think).
I am now living in the Middle East (Bahrain) and married, so very rarely seeing any of the old crew.
Would be good to hear from you,
Pete Anderson.
