Long Lost Friend
6 May 2005 I am looking for a family that owned a restaurant/pub called the Hare and the Hound a few years back. The name of the family was Davies. I believe the man's name was John and the wife's name was Mary. They have a son named John Brinley Davies and I am trying to locate him. He had 3 other siblings... 2 brothers and a sister.
In 1967 thru 1969, this family resided in Issaquah, Washington USA. John Davies (the father) worked for The Boeing Company until he was laid off, then he returned to England where he opened up the Hare and the Hound restaurant. I knew John from Issaquah high school in approximately 1968. I would really like to contact him. It has been a dream of mine since we lost contact.
If anyone can tell me anything about this family please e-mail me at
Thank you so much, Linda Benedetti

11 February 2005 Hi!
I am looking for an English woman that was working/visiting Oakland, California in 1968. We were both overseas operators for Pacific Bell. Her name then was Shirley Ottley (I may be misspelling her last name.) She introduced me to my then future husband . . . in fact, we still have her "chimney sweep" in our kitchen!
The only information I have to go on is:
1- I think she married in England on August 29, 1970. I don't know the groom's name.
2 - Her wedding picture was taken by Kered Studios of Biggleswade and Bedford.
Not much to go on, I know. But, if any of you could help me locate her, I would appreciate it.
My name is Rose Mary, and my e-mail address is rmpoet@cox-internet.com. If you contact me, please use "Shirley" in the subject line so I won't delete the message in error.
Thank you.

Can remember having National Health bottles of watery and very sticky orange juice.
My grandmother's name was Lily May Abbott (not sure if this was her real Christian name, but that's what people called her). She was married to Harry Abbott, who died in 1943.
May be no connection at all, but would be interesting to know. Have a happy and peaceful new year. My email address is willowwong@yahoo.co.uk. Would love to hear from you.

Missing Relative
4 December 2004 My name is Kathleen McKenzie and I live in New Zealand. I am researching my family tree and have had great assistance from a new found cousin, Brenda Green who lives in Biggleswade. The last contact I had from her was in March this year, when she sent me a message telling me she had some health problems. I havent heard from her since, despite sending her several emails over the last few months. Another relative in Canada has also just emailed me asking if I had heard from her as her emails had been returned.
Needless to say we are both concerned at her lack of communication and wonder if she is okay. Neither of us have her telephone no. or address.
I was wondering if you would be able to help?
Many thanks

JAKES Family
20 September 2004 Hello, I came across your site on the internet and was hoping you may be able to help me with my genealogy research of a branch of my family that came from the Biggleswade area.
This is what I have so far, from the IGI.
My great, great grandfather, James JAKES ( sometimes spelled Jaques or Jacques) was born in Biggelswade in Dec. of 1830, to parents Thomas and Mary (Burton) JAKES, according to the IGI. Thomas and Mary were married 6 July, 1821 in Biggleswade, and I found 8 children, all born in Biggeslwade (IGI) George 1822, Thomas 1822, Henry 1823, Mary 1825, Elizabeth 1827, James 1829 died 1829, James 1830, and Sophia 1832.
James Jakes married Mary Ann Edwards, from FeltWell, Norfolk around 1850, but I can find no marriage date or place. James and Mary Ann moved to Barking Essex at some point, and I have their census records from 1871, 1881, and 1891. Some of the Jakes were ropemakers.
I would like to know more about the JAKES, trace the family further back, find them on the 1861, 1851, 1841 censuses, and any other BMD records that may be available. Since I live in Alberta, Canada, I cannot come there and do research myself. I also cannot afford to pay 25 pounds an hour for a professional researcher either. But I am willing to cover any costs or pay for someones times to look for them. My mother came from England in 1919, at age 6 months, and knows nothing of her family. She is now 85 and of failing health, and I am trying to provide her with her genealogy before it is too late.
Any help you can offer would be so greatfully appreciated.
Thanking you in advance,
Sincerely,
Judy Carleton

Doll & Albert Abbott
5 September 2004 As a toddler during WW2 I went & stayed with my aunt & uncle. I came from Walthamstow & all I can remember was they lived in Biggleswade. As I was only about 2 years old I can't remember much but I do remember pea picking with my aunt & other people. I also remember a little blond girl there & I once saw a photo of the girl & myself together (both aged 2 or 3). My Aunts name was Doll Abbott & her husband was Albert, who I beleive worked in the area, that is why they moved to Biggleswade from W'stow. Albert was also an expert pianist.
I have often thought about my time in your town & would be pleased if anyone can remember me or my Aunt & Uncle. They later moved to Letchworth & had a daughter Pauline, who I have lost contact with.

History of Biggleswade 50 years ago
26 August 2004 My name is Stanley Yamashita. I am an American citizen of Japanese ancestry who lived in Biggleswade 50 years ago. I was stationed at Wimpole Park with the USAF near Royston, Herts from 1952 to 1956. I am married to Margaret A .Fitton Yamashita who is from Biggleswade.
I also belonged to the Biggleswade RUFC. I was introduced to the sport by my brother-in-law Anthony (Tony) Russell who was a school teacher in Biggleswade. I played for 2 years but was not very good at it. I remember the good times that was had by all after the matches, at the "Swan" Pub, all the good beer (ales) and comradeship.
My wife and I were married in 1955 at St Andrews Church in Biggleswade. She still has a cousin Dawn who lives in Caldecote a neighboring area. We left to go to the USA in 1956 but were never able to get stationed in the UK again. We have been back several times but usually to the southeastern part of England where her sister now lives. We now have reunions every two years for the people who stationed at Wimpole Park which now no longer exists. About half of the wives who attend the reunion are from the UK.
We amazed to find the web site with Biggleswade and all the pictures of the area. We shall now check the web more frequently for news about Biggleswade. My wife and I now live in Hawaii so travelling that distance is now a problem but we can check the web site.
Thanx for hearing me out. My email address is : magNstan@hawaii.rr.com , if anyone is interested.
Aloha,

Tingey Family of Biggleswade - Message Number 2
12 August 2004 Re- James and Sarah Tingey of Biggleswade as posted earlier.
I have now found the name of the Inn that James and Sarah ran.
It was No 87 - The Public House in Saffron Road, Biggleswade, they also had another child named Albert who was 9 in 1871.
Apart from wanting to know about James' parentage (I have all of Sarah's MUNT family information) I would dearly love to see an old drawing or photograph of the Public House.
Regards
Rosemary26 December 2004 I have an email address for anyone researching this surname. I was a Tingey before marriage, my ancestors coming from East London Hackney and Bedfordshire and Yorkshire. My cousin Barbara Paris has a load of info regarding this surname. Her email address is bparis56@aol.com .
Tingey Family of Biggleswade
12 August 2004 Would anyone in Biggleswade have information on the TINGEY family there.
My great grandfather JAMES TINGEY was born in Biggleswade around 1833 and his father was William (Agricultural Labourer) don't know his mother's name though and this is frustrating. James married Sarah Munt in 1853.
I know they were still living there in 1871 as they are listed as living at the local hotel in the census (I believe they were running it, the name of the Inn has alluded me at present).
Their children were: James, Aurthur, Rosena (my great grandmother), Harriet and Elizabeth and possibly another son.
I know that there were many Tingey's living in that area.
James and Sarah married at the Parish Church of Luton if that gives anyone a clue.
James was a Bootmaker and Sarah a Bonnet Sewer. They later became very rich owning several hotels around the Bedfordshire area.26 December 2004 I have an email address for anyone researching this surname. Parish Register Lookup
12 August 2004 Good Morning,
If the local library has transcripts of the parish registers is there anyone that could look at something for me. My great grandfather was Samuel Leonard, but we don't know where he was born. Looking at some websites I have found in the time span I'm looking at there were 10 Samuel Leonards, one was born in Biggleswade.
The information I am looking for is a baptism in Jan, Feb or March of 1855 for Samuel LEONARD - I'd like to know who his parents were.
You can email me on corrallm@btopenworld.com
Many thanks in advance.

Maythorne
11 July 2004 I am trying to get information on a company Called Maythorne and Sons who were carriage/coach builders and operated between 1842 and 1932 from Fox's Yard in Sun Street. My interest in this company stems from the fact I have purchased a very grand sociable carriage made by the Maythorne company from an elderly gentleman from Hull who advised me the carriage was made for the 9th Duke of Bedford. I canot find a date on the carriage but was wondering if there was any company records or photographs about from which I can perhaps establish the facts and origins of the carriage. The man I purchased it from bought it in 1968 and was given the information from the previous owner. I have e-mailed the Head of Antiquities at Woburn Abbey to see if they can also help. I would be very grateful for any help or information you can give me. I have now transported the coach to my home in Northern Ireland.
If you can help with this enquiry please let me know. Thanks, Alan Dansey

Tingey Family Search
9 July 2004 My name is William Tingey and I live in Leduc, Alberta, Canada. My family came to Canada from England in mid 1800's. After the death of my father I was going through some old phots and came across one from what appears to be a seminary in the area in 1881. I know my family came from near there and was wondering id anyone can assist. My great Grandfather was William Henry TINGEY and he came to Canada with his brother James.
Any information would be helpful.
Thanks, I can likely scan the photo and send it over if this would help.26 December 2004 I have an email address for anyone researching this surname. Boutell and others in Biggleswade in the 1800's
8 July 2004 This is my first visit to this message board and am delighted by the interest of so many, to make it work.
I have noted the request from Geraldine BURGESS in Balcombe, Sussex, on the 21 April last year for information on George BOUTELL. His parents were James BOUTELL and Martha EVANS, married Biggleswade 14th November 1826. George had a number of sisters but probably no brothers. George and his relatives are shown in the 1841 and 1851 censuses. I have some other information.
My interest is in EVANS and ROE both of Biggleswade. Martha EVANS mentioned above was the daughter of Caleb EVANS and Ann MARSOM. She had a sister Mary. Caleb is a relative to my 2 x greatgrandparents, Daniel ROE and Eliza HOLDSWORTH. Daniel appeared (fully grown!) in 1825 as a shoemaker and resident of Biggleswade and disappeared from there sometime after 1833. I've searched since 1983 for more information on him before and after those dates, without success.
So, if Geraldine or anyone else interested should wish to contact me without burdening this excellent message board then I am at specialeyes@waitrose.com
