| ABOUT
THE CLUB The Club was formed in 1950 to continue the activities of the Athletic and Grass Track Cycle Racing Meeting which had been held under the auspices of the old Biggleswade Horticultural Society from the early 1900s. A brick Clubhouse was built at Fairfield Sports Ground on land belonging to Wells & Winch (now Greene King), which was the garden of the old Royal Oak pub in Sun Street. We still use the building and are currently looking at ways of obtaining funding for a major refurbishment exercise. The Club stages several athletics events during the year including two Track meetings, one particularly for youngsters, a 10 km. Road Race for the Eastern Veterans Athletic Club, and more recently the Sandy 10 Mile Road Race. We have also hosted the County Cross Country Championships and currently run in two Cross Country Leagues, allowing competition for athletes aged 11 and upwards. Athletes also run in the Southern and National Championships. During the summer the Club runs in the Mens Southern League for Track and Field as well as Open Meetings and County events. |

| The Club has 8
Registered Coaches who hold two training sessions a week
on Club nights, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and sometimes at
weekends. Many youngsters are involved in these sessions
but we are also keen to help any older athletes,
regardless of age or standard, who would like to develop
their own skills in jogging, running, track, or field.
Keeping fit can be very enjoyable and we do not expect
that everybody will want to take part in races. However,
we often find that athletes are keen to run in scheduled
events when they realise they are part of a team, running
against others of similar ability. As the famous Nike
advert says, we believe people should Just Do
It. |

| We
have groups of runners who enjoy training at all times of
the week and weekends. These are very enjoyable sessions,
running along footpaths and tracks, often in very
pleasant countryside. Sometimes we include more
challenging sessions which might incorporate some hills
or interval work, but runners of all abilities can still
take part. For those more adventurous there is a group of
us who take part in, and often organise, longer events
out in the wilds of Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Wales, and
even Scotland. We often take spouses/sweethearts so the
weekends become very sociable, with the odd pint or two
being imbibed. We hold a number of Social events during the year, where again wives and husbands come along - perhaps a meal in the pub, but always something informal. We also hold at least one event designed specifically for youngsters - perhaps a Barbecue combined with a bit of orienteering beforehand, but again the emphasis is on fun. We also publish a monthly Newsletter giving details of events and news of interest to members. |

| So whatever your age or level of fitness, or if you feel you would like to become more involved with athletics through becoming a coach, timekeeper, starter, or judge, come along and join us. We would love to have you as a member and we will help you realise your ambition in athletics, whatever that might be. | ![]() Click for more |
